The WOOD4PLASTIC project aims to develop biodegradable and compostable bio-based materials from lignocellulosic agroforestry residues. This project is funded by the European Commission to contribute to the decarbonization of the bioplastic industry. Key challenges include:
- Obtaining high-purity sugars for fermentation into building blocks and biopolymers.
- Producing specific grades of lignin with improved compatibility for use in thermoplastic biomaterials.
- Optimizing processes to produce biomaterial formulations that can be processed using standard plastic technologies.
One targeted application is the development of innovative thermoformed paper-based trays for food packaging. The project will explore different manufacturing technologies and assess various end-of-life scenarios for recycling.
Aitiip Centro Tecnológico, as the project coordinator, will serve as the primary point of contact for partners and leverage its experience in European project coordination to ensure successful project outcomes.
