Biopolymers with advanced functionalities for building and automotive parts processed through additive manufacturing

The European Union produces just around 110 million tons of animal and vegetal waste each year, 30 % of which is directly produced by the agriculture, hunting and forestry sector. These huge amounts of residues and processing by-products from the agro-food industry represent a clear problem from both, the economic and environmental point of view.
The need to combine the reduction of waste streams, particularly those raising from bio-based resources and to find innovative bioadditives and bioresins to improve the properties and competitiveness of alternative materials to the traditional polymers and composites has led to a new and promising research avenue, where high-performance materials are designed and produced with advanced technologies, such as 3D-printing, to obtain improved performance in key physical-chemical properties, such as high mechanical and thermal resistance and new colour designs.
The target of BARBARA project is the development of novel bio-based engineering bioplastic materials to validate in functional prototypes with advanced properties and innovative functionalities (mechanical, thermal resistance and aesthetical optical and texture, well-being: customised fragrance and antimicrobial) manufactured through Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) additive manufacturing technology for two demanding sectors: automotive and building. BARBARA project will forge and propel industries growth within the frame of European bioeconomy by boosting our community network and bringing together European platforms.
Aitiip role
AITIIP is the coordinator of the project and will be responsible of assisting other partners in the development of their activities. AITIIP will lead the WP6-Project Management, WP3-FDM processing and product validation prototypes (producing the prototypes and developing an innovative heading for the FDM machine) and WP5-Communication and dissemination. AITIIP will be involved transversally in WP4 providing data for LCA and LCC and WP2 giving support with their Knowledge in materials manufacturing and characterisation in relation to the needs of FDM filament to NUREL and TECNOPACKAGING.
